Summary of the first semester.

During the first half of 2019 the High Resolution, Simulations & Observations of the  Lower Solar Atmosphere group has been present in several academic and social activities meeting with research groups from all around the world. In this post we wish to share with you, our readers, some of our activities carried out in this period of time.
Starting the year, in February, the group's head Dominik Utz was visiting the National Astronomical Observatory of Colombia in Bogotá, where he was discussing with different master students in Astronomy and undergraduate students in Physics about future solar physics works in collaboration with our group in Graz, Austria.
As well as giving two seminar talks about the recent observation campaign the group carried out and the future European Solar Telescope (EST).

In April, most of the members of the group were visiting the Leibniz-Institut für Astrophysik Postdam where the third workshop for the analysis of data from the observation campaign carried out at the GREGOR telescope was held (Read: GREGOR Observation Campaign: The Incoming or Part 1), with interesting results coming out from such discussions with all the members working hard on new insights into the solar magnetism.

After that, in May some members of the group (Dominik Utz, Otmar Kühner, Kilian Krikova, and Jose Ivan) attended the 2nd Chinese European Solar Physics Meeting (CESPM 2019) that was held on the island of Hvar in Croatia, where we all participated in the poster mode, and which Scientific presentations during the meeting covering all scientific aspects of the Sun, from the solar core, to the solar corona, and the heliosphere.

In June, the head of the group, Dominik Utz, and the PhD student Jose Ivan Campos Rozo, were visiting India. Where they were attending during the first week the Solar Physics Summer School at Raman Science Center, Leh (Indian Institute of Astrophysics). Here Dominik Utz assisted as a lecturer, whereas Jose Ivan attended as a student of the school.

The second week the two members of the group visited the Indian Institute of Astrophysics  under the Austrian Exchange Service Project (OAD/WTZ) with India: Morphologic evolution of small-scale solar flux tubes and its implication for MHD waves, for discussions with different researchers from the IIA, and starting new collaborations and projects with different PhD students. Of course, there is also always some time for sightseeing. This time we went to a national park to see some tigers in their natural habitat:

Starting the first month of the second semester a total solar eclipse occurred. The visibility of the eclipse was given for parts of countries such as Chile and Argentina. Although we were not present in person, activities such as public outreach talks were held at the IGAM/Institute of Physics, as well as a live broadcast of the astronomical event, where the High Resolution, Simulations & Observations of the  Lower Solar Atmosphere group was actively collaborating in the development of the different activities.

In between all the events, there is also space for social time and for the creation and strengthening of new personal connections with different researchers around the world.
As mind and body should be once we have to remind ourselves also in doing some sporty activities from time to time. This time, our group leader, Dominik Utz, and the master student Kilian Krikova, participated in the biggest university sports event in Europe called the USI RUN 2019. You can find some pictures at the bottom where we want to share with you our activities in the first half of 2019.  Enjoy your summer from a too hot office in the astronomical tower of the University of Graz.

Thank you very much for staying with us, and till the next time.
